The figures on this page come from the Federal Reserve’s 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, released on October 9, 2026: the most detailed survey of American household wealth, run every three years. Net worth is everything a household owns, including its home, minus everything it owes.

Five-year bands rest on a few hundred surveyed households each, so they move around: the median for 55 to 59 comes out below 50 to 54, which is sampling noise rather than a real drop. The ten-year groups above are steadier.
Why the average is so much higher than the median
Wealth is concentrated, so a small number of very rich households pull the average far above the typical household. For all households the average is $1,232,000, more than five times the $216,100 median, and the average sits above the 80th percentile. The median is the better answer to “what does a typical household my age have”.
What counts in net worth
- Assets: bank accounts, investments, retirement accounts, the home and other real estate, vehicles, businesses and other property.
- Debts: mortgages, home equity loans, car loans, student loans and credit card balances.
- Not counted: future Social Security benefits and traditional pensions, which are worth a lot to older households but are not assets they can sell.

About the data
The Survey of Consumer Finances interviewed about 4,400 households between April 2025 and May 2026, weighted to represent all 135 million US households. Age is the age of the household’s reference person. We computed the percentiles from the Fed’s public data file with the survey weights; our medians and averages match the Fed’s own public-data tables. The Fed’s bulletin, built on internal data, differs by under 2% (a median of $215,900 for all households). Values are in 2025 dollars.
