Savings rate retirement calculator

What fraction of income you save, and how many years that takes to the FIRE number. The wait is a function of the contribution, not of the salary slogan.

The calculator

Annual saving$24,000
FIRE number$1,250,000
Years of saving23.1 years

Rate versus salary

Two households can share a salary and finish decades apart if one saves 10% and the other 30%. The contribution is income × rate; years-to-fund sees only that contribution. The FIRE calculator is the same identity with a dollar contribution instead of a rate.

Assumptions

Savings are the only contribution. Spending in retirement is independent of today’s income.

Frequently asked questions

Does savings rate matter more than salary?
For the wait to a FIRE number, yes: the contribution is income times the savings rate, and that contribution is what years-to-fund sees. A higher salary with a lower rate can lose to a smaller salary that actually saves.
What savings rate is enough?
Enough is the rate that reaches your number by the age you named. This page computes that wait. It is not a recommended percentage.
